The Birth of Bubble Bars
12 years ago, the inventors of LUSH worked with Mr.
Butler who was a micro-tester for the dairy product. He had
once said to Helen Ambrosen how interesting it would be to
try cream of tartar instead of citric acid in the Bath Bomb
formulations.
One day, Helen was working on her new deodorants and
remembered his words and tried the cream of tartar with the
sodium bicarb, which as well as being the main ingredient of
Bombs, is also that of deodorants. Helen mixed bicarb, cream
of tartar, and water and left it over night. By morning, it
was solid.
Helen then decided to drop the solid lump into water to see
what would happen…nothing. It took ages to dissolve and made
her think that she could probably add more water and even
other things like bubble bath base, which she proceeded to
do. Helen had also discovered that blending cocoa butter
with baking soda and citric acid, instead of cream of
tartar, created an aerated effect. Of course, this delighted
her creative mind and became the Floating Island. This is
serendipity at its best!
