Fresh Organic Lemon Juice

Lemon juice is a fantastic ingredient to use on the hair, giving shine and healthy lustre. In Caca Rouge it also helps bring out the redness in the henna, lightening it for maximum brilliance.

Persian Henna

We use the finest Persian henna, which has been used since ancient times to dye the skin and hair. The leaves are dried and ground into a powder and it is this, mixed with conditioning cocoa butter, which forms the basis of our Cacas.

Red is for passion.

Release the flame-haired temptress within! Caca Rouge is the reddest of our henna dyes and is sure to get you noticed.

Red, Redder, Reddest.

Blondes or those with a lot of grey can expect to see a vibrant head of titian hair after using Caca Rouge, while brunettes will get a gorgeous warm red tinge that catches in the sun. As with all our hennas, you should always do a strand test first to make sure you will be happy with the result.

I have never used henna before, but absolutely adore LUSH products, so I thought I'd trade up and go with henna dye. I read all the reviews before attempting this and was a little worried it would be a lot of work. As it turns out, if you know what you're doing, it's not as difficult as people make it out to be.

First of all, if you want the dye to be smooth and consistent, use a cheese grater to shred the bar rather than just pouring boiling water over pieces. I have fairly short hair too, so I only needed to use 2 out of 6 of the pieces. When adding water, it doesn't need to be boiling, just hot. I used about 1/3 cups hot water per square. Once you pour the hot water over the shredded henna, mix it until completely blended, the mixture will be smooth and thick. Make sure you put on gloves and then just grab small globs of the dye and mix into hair. As long as you use small amounts at a time, it shouldn't be that messy. Once you're done, I would suggest covering your hair with saran wrap. I had very blonde hair before, so I left the mixture on my hair for 6 hours (if you have darker hair, you may only need to leave it on half that amount of time). It may seem like a long time, but if you have chores to do around the house or a couple of movies you've been wanting to watch, it's not that bad. When time is up, just rinse it our like you would any other dye. It will run out of your hair like slimy mud and may take a while to completely rinse out. I would suggest shampooing your hair at least twice to get it all out. The smell of the dye can be a bit overwhelming, but if you have a strong shampoo, it won't be so bad. When everything was rinsed out of my hair, it smelled kind of like a ginger tea.

Everything I said may seem like a lot of work, but it's really not that difficult. My end result (since my hair was so blonde before hand) was a very vibrant, almost copper, red. Well worth all the work that went into it. When everything was done, my hair felt a lot healthier too. I would definitely recommend this to someone who want the bright color, but without the damage that comes with traditional dyes

My hair is medium-brown, and about mid-back length. I've been coloring it red with commercial off-the-shelf dyes for about 7 years. I wanted something more natural and sustainable (both for the environment and for my hair over the long haul), and decided to try Lush's caca mama rogue. Before I get the the results, my process was such: First, I read through ALL of the reviews here on Lush, and took notes on the amount of henna used per hair length, amount of time left on hair, additives, mixtures, application procedures, etc. I compiled all the notes and used the following procedure:_____________________________• I used four blocks for my mid-back length hair. There was none left over, so this was the perfect amount• Grate the blocks with a cheese grater into fine consistency - use the smallest holes• Add paprika , chili powder, cinnamon (approx 2 tbsp of each)• Put dry mixture into a glass bowl that will fit snuggly inside a sauce pan. Add water to the sauce pan and heat it up. This serves to keep the mixture warm. Add red wine a little at a time to the powered mixture until it is the consistency of pudding or yogurt. Some reviews noted that you may want to let the mixture sit over night to let the color release. Since caca rogue is sold with lemon juice already added and is already a brownish red color, I think the color release process has already occurred. This step is necessary with pure henna because it comes as a green powder and you have to add an acidic solution and let it sit over night for it to turn a brownish color)• Put some moisturizer on ears and hairline to keep them from getting dyed orange. (I forgot to do this and didn't have any orange skin).• Lay down several towels, newspaper, or an old sheet to protect floors and cabinets• Using a squeeze bottle (I used the kind you can buy at [...] from the kitchen section for catsup or mustard and cut the tip about half way off to make the opening bigger), apply first to roots of clean, dry, unconditioned hair. Use gloves to protect hands. Work from back to front. Go as thick as possible on the past. Put on roots first and let sit an hour or two (I went two hours) before putting the rest of the mixture on hair.•After you apply to the roots, wrap up hair with saran wrap. Heat up head with blow dryer and wrap in towel, knit cap, or shower cap to keep warm. Do this again after you've added the rest of the mixture to your hair. I didn't have the patience to keep doing the blow dryer thing, so every so often I would pop my towel into the oven in a glass dish, heat it up for about 5 minutes on 200 degrees, and then put it on my head. This worked pretty well. • After 6-8 hours, rinse out in the shower (I went 8 hours). Use a silicon-free conditioner and a fine-tooth comb to help. Don't shampoo for 24-48 hours. I didn't have much trouble rinsing it out, but it took some time. Afterward, my hair wasn't greasy, but it did feel a little...weird. This went away over night as my hair continued to absorb the cocoa butter. The next day, my hair was soft and very shiny. _____________________________So that was my process. Conclusion: After a week, I liked the color on most of my hair, although it was a little more coppery than I wanted. I think this product would work well for those with light colored, thinner, or porous hair that takes dye easily. The part of my hair that had been bleached by chemical dyes took the henna well. After a week, that part of my hair was a coppery auburn. To my disappointment however, my roots did not change much in color. They had a reddish-brown cast to them, but the darker roots were still quite visible. I didn't like the dark roots, so I next tried some body art quality henna (the pure green stuff). I used a slightly different procedure that I read about online (different mixture, no heat, only 3.5 hours on my hair). This worked well at covering my roots. They're not the exact same color as the rest of my hair, but you have to look closely to see the difference. The body art quality henna also made my hair a ruby red, instead of a coppery auburn color. This may be due to the dual application of caca rouge and the other henna, but I am very pleased with the result and hope to be able to replicate it in the future.

Comments about LUSH Caca Rouge Mama:

I love Lush Hair Henna! I used to colour my hair in all different shades, but I was left with a lot of damage and had to cut 18 inches off. :( I have strawberry blonde hair naturally, but I have always wanted it to be more red. Enter: Lush. I first tried it about 6 months ago and it came out a fiery orange red which I was super happy with!

My hair just brushed my shoulders and I used 1/3 (two cubes) of the bar. More than enough. The girl I spoke to at the store told me to make it thicker than the instructions said so I made it the consistency of cake batter. Thin enough to reach my roots, but not so runny as to drip everywhere. I leaned over the side of my tub after putting about an inch of water in the bottom to keep it from staining (it still did a little, but came out with a little scrubbing). I left it in for 3 hours which was plenty of time to get a good colour.

Definitely apply Ultra Bland to face and ears and also the back of the neck.

Comments about LUSH Caca Rouge Mama:

I have very short, color treated hair. In the past few months its been bleached, colored red, then brown. But my favorite color is natural red, so I thought I'd try this. I mixed it up, put it on my head, wrapped clip wrap on it, and left it in for two hours. The result was a great gingery orange deep red that I love. It looks natural but vibrant. I love it!

Comments about LUSH Caca Rouge Mama:

I've religiously dyed my hair for the past few years, which hasn't been too nice to my ends. It's been a year since I've used permenant dye and since I've been getting the itch for a change, I decided to try henna. Initially I was afraid it wouldn't be drastic enough of a change for my hair (I had mostly dark brown hair, with the ends a light, golden blonde color). Let me just say-- after only four hours of having it on the color change was just what I wanted, mainly because my ends and a large part of my hair was previously dyed using permanant dyes.

I have thick, kinky and curly afro hair, which I was afraid would make apply it harder and make rinsing it difficult as well. My hair is about bra strap length when stretched, so I used half the block which was a little short but fine (I'd suggest using four squares if you're hair is similar to mine and you want to make sure you get everywhere evenly). To apply, I broke the squares up and melted them over a pot of hot water, added a glass of red wine, and then added hot water. It was super messy to put on, but it only took me about 20 minutes to apply and then I wrapped my head in cling film. I didn't use gloves as well, so my hands were dyed orange for a few hours (no worries since it fades quickly). To remove the henna, I ended up dunking my head in a bucket of water a few times, shampooing it twice, and then deep conditioning/rinsing it. All in all, it wasn't too hard to get out.

As I stated the color came out really intense on my ends, which were the lightest part of my hair and the rest is a tinted a nice deep auburn. Plus my hair is really soft, so I'll definitely be using this again!

Comments about LUSH Caca Rouge Mama:

I have mousy brown hair with over processed ends that reaches to the bottom of my shoulder blades. My hair is fine, but I have a lot. After reading all of the reviews and comments, I really was unsure whether I wanted to try this or not. I have 2 children under the age of 3, so my time is very limited. All I knew is my hair was two toned from all the color I have had on it in the past, so I definitely wanted to fix that, and my hair dresser told me there was no way red would stay in my hair in the current condition my hair was in. I started looking for other options. I stopped by my local lush and spoke with the very helpful associate there and decided to jump in. I figured at a worst case, this would be a conditioning treatment got my hair.

I started off with a strand test. Kept it on for 40 minutes or so. I could tell that my hair had a slight tint to it, but it wasn't drastic, so I was still unsure what I was getting myself in to. I used 3 squares, half of the bar. I cut the half block into 3 individual squares, put enough hot bottled water just to cover them in a glass bowl added a teaspoon each of cheyenne, cinnamon, and peprika. I covered this and let it sit for 20 minutes. I then put the glass bowl on top of a saucepan with an inch of water in it. I kept it on low yup keep the henna warm. It took about ten minutes of constant stirring before all the lumps were out. I kept the temp warm on the double boiler through out the application. The temp was not warm enough to burn my scalp, but just bearable to the touch.

I enlisted the help of a friend. She applied the henna roots first, just like arty the salon. We were going to leave it in my roots for awhile first, but decided it would get too dry. The 3 squares was the perfect amount for my hair, there was none left over. During application and while waiting to process the henna stats to dry out. Where ever you go it drops it'd like little coffee grounds, so it is a little messy. After application I wrapped my hair in cling film and left out on for 3 hours. I did apply ultra balm to my hair line before the application process. I kept applying it because the coffee like grounds fell out under my wrap and also the mix dripped on my side burns. Thank god I had someone helping me so that they could tell me when I needed to wipe the drips.

After 3 hours was up, my friend rinsed my hair in the kitchen sink with the sprayer. She got all of my hair wet first, added tons of conditioner, and rinsed, rinsed, rinsed. She did one final shampoo and condition and I was all set.

During application and rinsing, she wore gloves. Now we were all skeptical when we were applying the baby poo green batter to my hair, but when I dried my hair...WOW! I have one even color and it is RED! My hair looks the best it ever has. Seriously, if you are on the fence about this, just do it. I gave it 5 stars because, yes it is messy, there is no changing that, but what it does to your hair is absolutely amazing!

Sorry for any typos, I did all of this on my phone. I dont usually do reviews, but thought it might be helpful. Good luck!

Comments about LUSH Caca Rouge Mama:

My hair is fine, mousy, and I've used store-bought red dyes, as well as getting my color done at a salon, and *nothing* compares to my first LUSH henna experience. I wanted RED, and I got it.

The friendly gals at the shop helped by doing the application for me gratis (which was doubly great, since it was my first time using henna)...

For my fine, longish hair, it took a half a block of Rouge (3 small cubes) plus one small cube of Marron for depth. The application took about an hour and was pretty messy (so having it done in the shop was a big plus -- no clean-up!) I left wearing a shower cap.

At home, I immediately wrapped more, making a sort of plastic wrap turban. The henna stayed damp for HOURS that way. I was still wiping little drips from around my ears 6 hours later. At bedtime, I removed all the plastic and made a new wrap of thin (dark) cotton. I put a dark towel over my pillow and slept with the cotton wrap, which let the henna dry overnight.

In the morning, I washed it all out using baby shampoo. It took a while! But the results are INCREDIBLE. My hair has never been so bright, soft and glossy. The color is amazing, better than anything I've ever gotten at a salon.

Now that I've got a solid red base, I'm guessing I won't need to wear it overnight next time...

So anyway. If you're a mousy blonde who wants truly RED hair, and you're willing to deal with 16 hours in a turban, try this henna! :)

Comments about LUSH Caca Rouge Mama:

When I first purchased the product I was very skeptical about it. I'm a natural red-head but recently my natural color has been fading and I wanted a bit more oomph. I have very thin hair and it's moderately long (Around my mid-back) and I used two blocks, just in case anyone else with my hair type is wondering how much to use. Unfortunately, when using the product, it got all over my bathroom and was quite difficult to apply to my hair. On the upside though, if cleaned up in time, the splatters of Henna don't stain. Once washed out, the color looked BEAUTIFUL and very natural. I've been constantly getting comments about how natural it looks and I'm going on day 4 of color. Another downside to the product though is the smell. After three washes, my hair still smells strongly of Henna. I've been spraying perfume in it as to relieve the smell, as strange as it may sound. Overall, great product though and I would recommend this to anyone who asks(:

I used this to dye all of my really really long hair (waist length). I'll admit it was really messy , like we are talking really messy . It pulled and clumped and a couple of times i was really worried it wouldn't turn out right or I did something wrong, or worst that this mud-like stuff wouldn't come out of my hair (!!!!) . I really don't know why every body is complaining about the smell. Its doesn't smell musky or disgusting its smells clean and herbal. The color was (is) amazing.I had blonde/brown hair with some red undertones that looked boring and mis-matched . The coverage was really much better than the dyes you buy at Walgreen's etc. The color is this warm coppery red . It looks really natural and not ridiculously red or even worst maroon . I'm so pleased and love my hair again! Also i don't know if its the product of what but my hair is smoother, my split ends don't looked fried at all , shiner, and just feels better than if i had used a chemical dye. I love this stuff and definitely will be using it again. Thank you so much

I am a person who loves to stand out in a crowd. Born with blonde hair I have been dying my hair copper with a well known chemical dye for the past 15 years. However my hair has become dry and EXTREMELY damaged over the years and was breaking terribly. My hairdresser warned at my last haircut (as she cut off 4 inches of damage) the coloring had to stop. So I have been blonde and depressed:) Then I came across this caca rouge, a miracle!
Is it messy? Yes. But the results are insane and my hair is so shiny and looks healthy. Now a few of my observations that I hope will save you time...I made mine thick the first time so I could sleep with it in and it wouldn't run. Doing this made it hard to get down to my roots, so when I washed it out I had missed a few spots. So make sure you get those good. How I solved it and how I will do it from now on: I did it a little thinner, added a little olive oil and put it in a hair dying bottle and used it like I would a chemical dye. AWESOME! Worked like a charm. Wrapped my hair in plastic wrap, a hat and slept for 9 hours. My hair is gorgeous flaming copper! I am a convert forever!!!!

This was my first hair dying experience and it was a total success! I used 3 blocks for my thick-but-fine hair. It was really fun to use (even though it was a little messy) and it turned out great! Even 2 months after my color should have faded people were telling me they could still see it. which made me very happy:) For a tip, I recommend NOT using conditioner (in your last shower before the henna) as it won't sink in as much. I'm def. gonna use Caca rouge again very soon! Also note that if you have darker hair don't expect a complete transformation..you'll notice a big difference but may not always see all of your color all the time. Don't let that stop you though!

Comments about LUSH Caca Rouge Mama:

I applied the henna to my hair today, and WOW! I am a strawberry blond, now fading with gray showing up. I added 2 blocks to my food processor, added 1 tbsp each ceyene, cinnamon, and paprika. It became basically powder in the FP. Then added boiling water to the mixture in a glass bowl, my mixture was like loose pudding. put on the gloves, and smudged it all over my head, being sure to get the roots and evenly (as possible). Left it on for 1 hour, and thankfully decided to rinse. My hair has returned to the color I have always enjoyed having. I can't be more pleased, and will make this permanent in my hair routine. Be sure and use newspapers on the floor. I got in the shower to apply and rinse...wasn't anywhere near the mess I read about and expected. It cleans up fast, and easy. It really is as natural as you can get for a redhead. I'm so pleased... oh...the smell isn't bad at all...reminds me of sweet grass or fresh cut hay, but dissapates quickly. Natural product...natural smell. Enjoy !

Comments about LUSH Caca Rouge Mama:

I didn't use this personally, but I helped my sister prepare and apply it to her hair. She's wanted a change with out harsh chemicals. We have black hair and her's is medium length, very thick and a bit coarser than most. I was a bit skeptical about the color even showing up because of how dark out hair is and I had tried manic panic before on my own hair with very little results.

The prep isn't that bad. I think grating it seems like a waste of time, the first time I just chopped it up but that was a bit messy, so second time I broke it up into the individual blocks, put them in a bowl and smushed them with a heavy kitchen tool. You don't need to beat it, just apply force to it because the blocks are very soft and crumble easily under the pressure. The lady at the store told us that we don't really need to bother with adding anything like tea or coffee or paprika to the mix because that doesn't help with the color when coloring black hair.

To apply I just put lotion on her hair line and worked the product into her hair with gloved hands but I realized that it wasn't really getting ALL of her hair and just kind of clumping in one space. The second time, I bought one of those applicator brushes they use for hair dye to apply the henna and then I twisted the section of hair into a mini bun against her head. I took much longer than the first method but she has a lot of hair and it was the best way to make sure that all of it was covered. She said that it was a lot easier to wash out this way too.

The color does take a few days to show up, but after the second application the color came up more under the sunlight. It still doesn't show up that well in normal lighting but you can tell that her hair is lighter.

This is the best you can expect for black hair without using peroxide. Good natural alternative for a subtle change.

I love how this works for my hair. My hair is brown with a few red highlights naturally and now some gray hair popping up and this really makes my highlights shine and still looks natural. It smells better than any chemical product you can get. The color does take a day or two to really pop, but it is worth the wait. I put my brick in a plastic bag and crush it with a meat tenderizer to get it broken down and that works great. The saran wrap is goofy, but put a hat on over it and you can get on with your day and no one will notice.

I used a whole block for my Long hair (just past the shoulder blades) could have used 2 more squares! I must have used a tad too much water or the oils melted and got kinda drippy! Not sure which it was. I also added Paprika, Cloves and Cinnamon. These not only give the Henna a great "Spice Cake" smell that last and last, but it enhances the color of red! I would recommend this product and I will be using it again! I really liked being able to color on my timeline not the Henna's. I usually use Henna Powder from India and it takes 24 hours to process BEFORE you can color! and I usually leave it on for 8 hours, this time was cut in half!...Love your stuff!

i felt like having a bit of fun this summer and know that henna can be nice for hair texture. i definitely had soft curls after using and i do enjoy the smell of the henna while it's on. it was really, really messy for me but i think it'll be better on 2nd try. gave my hair (very dark brown) some great red tints in the sun.bright lights for about 3 weeks. i have chin length hair and used the whole bar on one go - next time i think i'll use half and do it a couple days in a row and see if i can get even brighter. will definitely continue to use this for fun every once in awhile - though will certainly apply while in the shower to save myself from cleaning the mess.

Comments about LUSH Caca Rouge Mama:

I have been routinely dying my hair for about the past 8 years. My hair is naturally dark, dark brown and I've had blonde, red, brown, pink, blue and purple hair. Most recently, my hair has had heavy highlights so it is very processed and damaged. I am always willing to try something new with my hair so I was excited to try henna hair dye. I went to the Lush in [...] in Sacramento, Ca where the sales associates were VERY helpful and knowledgable about this product. I ended up purchasing the caca rogue henna.2 nights later I tried it. It was easy to mix and just a little difficult to apply when it started to clump. I suggest to have someone help you apply the dye since I did it myself. I then saran wrapped my hair a wrapped a towel over it. At the recommendation of the sales associates at Lush, I slept with the dye in my hair overnight. The next morning, it didn't take too long to wash out. I straightened my hair and I LOVED the results! My grown out highlights are now a rich auburn color that looks really natural and my hair hasn't felt this soft or healthy in a long time. I am very pleased with the henna and I won't dye my hair with chemicals ever again!

Comments about LUSH Caca Rouge Mama:

I am 8 months pregnant and wanted a dye that was chemical-free. I started researching henna and liked the idea that I could pick this up from lush and do it right away. I am a natural medium/dark brunette but last year had my hair professionally dyed red. There was reminants of red on the bottom, but for the most part, my hair was brown. I started by grating 3 blocks thinking it would be enough for my shoulder length hair. I added 2 squeezed lemons and heated it up on a double boiler with boiling water. I thought I would apply this without getting too messy, but I was wrong. THIS STUFF IS MESSY. After applying, I realized I needed more, so I ended up making the other 3 blocks, therefore using the whole block. The first batch was really crumbly, so I added a squirt of olive oil and more water to the second round and it was much easier to apply.I covered my hair with cling wrap and ended up wearing it to bed. I had it on for a totally of 12 hours. I washed it out this morning, which wasn't as messy as I thought it would be, shampooed twice and then conditioned. The color looks great! My hair is red. Some reviews say it's just a highlight, but my hair really took to it and I definitely would be called a redhead at the moment. I love it! So worth the [$] versus the $300 I paid to get it done by a pro. Reason for 4 stars, the mess and time commitment.

Comments about LUSH Caca Rouge Mama:

I am a natural redhead, but I always want a deeper natural red than what I was born with so this seemed like a great option to try out even though I had my doubts...I mean, come on...it's a big green chunky brick that is supposed to turn your hair red??

I wouldn't say this product "smells bad", but I would say it smells about as good as dousing your hair in very fragrant wheat grass for a good few hours...

As far as the application goes, I have very thick hair and was able to squeeze it through my hair just enough to cover it all with 1/3 of the full brick. I generally use 2 boxes worth of chemical color, so it amazed me that I still have enough left for 2 more full head applications.

This product is messy, so I recommend using towels to shield your floor. Once the products starts drying out, it flakes a little bit and I noticed quite a bit of these flakes on my counter, but they were easily washed away.

I will say that generally after using chemical hair color, my hair is extremely soft to the touch and I had my concerns after washing away the henna and to the touch, my hair felt somewhat course and dried out, but contrary to the way it initially felt, I have fewer fly aways, softer hair, and am SOOO happy with the color.

The color change that you can see below was achieved in only 2 hours...I can't wait to see how long it lasts! I don't think I'll ever use any product other than the Caca Rouge ever again!

Comments about LUSH Caca Rouge Mama:

Hello! I bought caca rogue yesterday afternoon. This was my first henna attempt, and after researching for about a month i was ready to dive in. The application was aboslutely horrible and messy. However, my bathroom did get a full scrub down out of it, so i guess it wasn't SO bad. Washing the product out took a while, and two shampoos. The conditioner really was the helper though because it helped untangle my beast. I absolutely loved my hair and how soft it was. It was super shiney It had a slight red tint to it, and my blonde peek-a-boo highlight were a brighter copper color. I was quite okay with the results.

However, i woke up this morning, on my day off, and wondered how far i could push my red. I was looking for something a little bit brighter. So after reading everyone's reviews. I made a new batch. I added paprika, cinnamon, and olive oil to this herb cocktail. This seemed to keep the mixture from drying out like it did the previous evening. It also made it easier to apply. I feel like the olive oil played the key role in that. I also laid down old sheets (that i use for painting) on the floor, this helped with the mess.

I'm currently sitting with a pile of mud on my hair. I sat for five hours last night, and i'm thinking another five today. It seems like a lot of work for hair, but for whatever reason i absolutely love it. I can't wait to see what this second attempt brings me.
I'm not sure if henna is for everyone, but i'm hooked.

Comments about LUSH Caca Rouge Mama:

I have been religiously using Caca Rouge for about a year and a half now and will never ever go back to conventional chemical dyes. I have natural dirty blonde hair and the henna develops into this unbelievably vibrant and natural looking shade of orange-red, I receive compliments all the time, most of which from guys! :D

SO! I use about three cubes for my shoulder length hair, give them a rough chop, toss them into a Pyrex bowl with paprika and cinnamon, and stick my concoction into the oven while I wait for my water to boil (the henna releases more color the longer it's heated up). Once my water boils, I grab my henna mixture and mix the hot water into it until it reaches the consistency of brownie batter. I section off my hair and apply the henna wearing latex gloves.

Once it's on, I wrap my hair up tightly with plastic wrap and wait for 6 hours (I watch a movie, tidy up the house, school work, or sleep!).
When the time is up, I rinse my hair thoroughly and shampoo two times and condition. At this point, the color is still developing even after I've washed it off. In fact, it continues to develop over the next 24 hours, becoming darker and richer.

The cocoa butter in Caca Rouge is so moisturizing that the dying process actually doubles as a conditioning treatment. Unlike generic chemical dyes, the henna does not strip your hair but actually enhances the shine and the overall texture. This is an absolute staple in my beauty routine and because it lasts so long, I find that I really only have to do my roots when my hair grows. Definitely worth it!
