Opoponax Oil

Ingredient

Opoponax Oil

Benefits

Natural

Opoponax oil, also known as sweet myrrh oil, is a cousin of the healing myrrh oil with a warm-balsamic and sweet, honey-like aroma.

Opoponax and Myrrh oil are extracted by the sweet gum produced by the bark of Commiphora species, however, opoponax oil tends to smell lighter, more powdery, sweeter and warmer.

Native to East Africa, the dried resin, forming dark-reddish brown droplets that produce a sweet and robust-like aroma, is put through a steam distillation method to capture the Opoponax oil: a clear, pale yellow and thin essential oil.

Opoponax has been a component of incense and perfumes since Biblical times. Is said that its earthy aroma, rich in intoxicating woody nuances, can help us find stillness and calm.

Today is largely used in perfumery, especially in amber fragrances where it imparts sweet balsamic notes due to its resinous, ancient-earthy and deep aroma.
