The lemon tree (Citrus limonum) is a small, evergreen plant belonging to the Rutaceae family. Its yellow fruit has antibacterial properties on the skin, cleansing and brightening when applied topically.

The lemon peel (from which the zest is grated) is full of essential oil and you can actually see it on your hands and smell it by just peeling the yellow fruit.
