Fresh Strawberry Juice
Strawberries contain both malic and citric acids to cleanse and brighten the skin, they are a natural source of powerful antioxidants which help to improve the skin’s elasticity.
Strawberries are considered one of the world's healthiest foods. Despite their name, botanists do not class them as berries as their seeds are embedded on the surface, rather than protected within. They are instead classified as aggregate fruit as they are developed from several ovaries, unlike simple fruit which is developed from one singular ovary.
In many cultures, strawberries represent love and sensuality and are regarded as an aphrodisiac. They also have been used for centuries by folk healers to soothe the skin and to remove tartar and stains from teeth. This traditional use lives on today and is widely used in modern remedies and cosmetics. It is also said that Madame Tallien, from the court of Napoleon, believed strawberry juice to be so healing for her skin that she bathed in it.
Commercial strawberry production is usually concentrated near centres of consumption and available labour, as the berries need to be hand-picked; due to their perishable nature, they must be sold, frozen or processed quickly.
Lush uses the European species of wild strawberry (Fragaria vesca, wood strawberry), which produces small, conical and fragrant red berries.
