Tips for a Healthy Scalp
Caring for your scalp is crucial to ensure healthy hair and to avoid problems such as dryness, dandruff, and irritation. Here are some tips and products to help you care for your scalp effectively:
Tip one: Scrub and cleanse with sea salt
If your scalp feels congested, exfoliation can help remove roughness. This will leave your skin softer and smoother. A simple way to remove dry or flaky skin? Gently massage your scalp as you shampoo.
It feels great and gives your hair a deep clean. It removes product residue that builds up on your hair and scalp. In fact, it’s often one of the root causes of flakes and dull hair.
When you need something tougher than your own two hands, scrub it out with a scrubby sea salt shampoo like Big or Swell Shampoo a couple times a week. Prefer to go packaging-free? Seanik is another great option featuring plenty of sea salt and without added plastic. All three products contain coarse, scrubby sea salt to boost roots and deeply clean both hair and scalp.
Tip two: Turn down the heat
A hot shower can feel great, but it can also cause an itchy scalp. It may remove too much of your skin's natural oils. Turn down the temperature while washing and rinsing your hair, or reduce the total time spent in the shower. You’ll save energy, water and your scalp!
Tip three: Tone up with rosemary
If you’re battling excess oil or a troubled scalp, look for shampoos with toning, balancing rosemary. Use the Jumping Juniper Shampoo Bar. It has toning Sicilian lemon oil, cleansing juniper berry oil, and soothing lavender and rosemary.
Or try the New Shampoo Bar. It has lots of rosemary, plus stimulating nettle, peppermint, clove, and cinnamon. These ingredients help support healthy hair growth. And Rehab rounds things out with (you guessed it!) rosemary and juniper berry can help damaged hair.
They work with fresh juices and hydrating jojoba oil. Together, they make hair feel soft and healthy again. Just like a regular skincare routine, adding some toning ingredients can help balance the skin on your head. This prepares it for the next step: moisture.
Tip four: Hydrate and heal with salicylic acid
Excessive heat styling and product buildup can leave your scalp feeling parched. Along with your conditioner, try adding a dose of hydration with Superbalm Scalp Treatment or Ahaa Fresh Scalp Treatment. Both contain salicylic acid (made from natural meadowsweet) which helps to loosen and break down stubborn flakes.
Superbalm works to lock in hydration with rose wax while balancing skin with lavender and calming chamomile oils. Ahaa gives extra stimulation with rosemary and juniper berry. It also includes cleansing fruit juices and hydrating olive oil. Both strive to calm irritation and keep scalps soothed, happy and healthy.
Tip five: Calm and soothe with rose oil
Prone to dryness or dandruff? Wash regularly with Soak And Float Shampoo Bar to ease sore spots and prevent full-fledged skin tantrums. Cade oil cleanses the scalp and alleviates itchy skin while rose and marigold calm and soothe. Not only will your hair look, feel and smell fantastic, but your scalp will be happy and calm, too!
Tip six: Stimulate with peppermint oil
When you want to give your hair and scalp a tingly and refreshing indulgence, there’s Roots Hair Treatment. The fresh mint infusion, peppermint oil, and spearmint oil stimulate the scalp and leave it feeling cool and revitalized.
Nourishing honey and extra virgin olive oil keep your hair and scalp moisturized. They do this without making your hair heavy. You will have shiny, light hair and a calm, soothed scalp.
Tip seven: Nourish with castor oil
Finally, sometimes your scalp needs some extra TLC. If you want to calm and soothe dry, sensitive, or irritated scalps, try products with castor oil. It is nourishing and hydrating.
You can hydrate your hair after shampooing with Glory Conditioner. It has some of our favorites, like castor oil. It also includes hydrating olive oil, balancing lavender, and okra gel for extra slip.
After a shower or between washes, you can keep your scalp soft with Renee’s Shea Souffle Hair & Scalp Oil. This oil is packed with moisturizing shea butter and coconut oil. It also contains hydrating avocado and almond oils, along with our special castor oil. Great for massaging into the scalp directly, used to hydrate dry or fragile ends, or worked through braids, knots, or locs. A little goes a long way, depending on your curl type and porosity.
