Fig trees belong to the large mulberry family of plants, many of which are cultivated for their beautiful leaves. The common fig tree (Ficus carica) is grown for its ‘fruits,’ which are actually inside-out flowers. It is native to the Middle East and Western Asia. The fruits contain tiny seeds; they have a chewy texture and a sweet taste. Their natural sweetness meant that, before the days of refined sugars, they were often used as a sweetener.
