The peach tree (Prunus persica) belongs to the Rosaceae family and has been cultivated in China and Iran since Antiquity, brought to Europe by the Romans. Its fruit (the peach) has a fleshy exterior surrounding a hard shell that stores the kernel. There are hundreds of varieties of peaches with fuzzy skin ranging from white and yellow to red.
