Cleansing the skin and leaving it smooth, this sea salt is damn fine.
Salt can be obtained through various methods, including collecting seawater from the ocean, sea, or lake, then evaporating it to leave only the salt crystals. The resulting sea salt, less processed than regular table salt, retains moisture, along with the various minerals and trace elements found in the area where it is harvested. This means it could contain pollutants too, so it’s regularly tested to ensure it doesn't.
What a good excuse to speak about bird migration…
Salt marshes are generally located along coastlines and, therefore, bird migration routes. As nature is often threatened in coastal areas by construction, tourism, or erosion, migratory birds inevitably suffer the consequences. Salt marshes provide valuable refuge for them, especially when their owners are sensitive to their plight. For years, Lush has been working with sea salt suppliers committed to protecting birds and biodiversity.
Lush UK* sources fine sea salt from various suppliers; three of them are actively involved in bird conservation. They are located in Turkey, Portugal, and Bulgaria. In Bulgaria, salt is harvested from Lake Atanasovsko, a key stop on the Via Pontica, the second-most-important bird migration route in Europe. The lake hosts over 300 bird species each year, including the Dalmatian pelican, a vulnerable species.
…and to support a local business!
Lush UK* also purchases from Dorset Sea Salt. It was founded in 2017, using a small £3,000 loan from the Prince’s Trust. They are located on the Isle of Portland, not far from Lush headquarters and manufacturing sites in Poole.
Dorset Sea Salt aims to fill the void in the local industry by combining traditional and modern production methods. They harvest seawater from Chesil Beach via a pipeline around half a mile out to sea, then bring it back to their production facility to extract the salt. They work closely with leading environmental health and marine organisations to safeguard human and animal health, enable food security and support marine economies.
What are the benefits of fine sea salt for the skin and hair?
- Antimicrobial, it cleanses and purifies the skin and scalp.
- Astringent, it leaves the skin looking tight without stripping away too much natural oil.
- It can be very gently exfoliating, though it tends to dissolve quickly in water.
- In haircare products, it gives volume and shine.
Why is there fine sea salt in my shower gel?
Salt has many advantages in a product formula. As listed above, it is good for the skin, scalp, and hair, but it is also a natural preservative, helping to keep products clean and free from micro-organisms when used in appropriate quantities. In addition, it helps thicken the texture of our shower gels, so you don’t empty half a bottle every time you shower.
