Myristica fragrans

Nutmeg's aroma is reminiscent of the cosiest, most nostalgic puddings you can imagine. Gentler on the nose than cinnamon and clove, it pairs well with other spicy aromatics to conjure sweet, nutty supporting notes that will leave you feeling as snug as a bug in a rug.

What is nutmeg?

Nutmeg is a small fruit, about the size of an apricot. At the centre of the fruit, you will find two spices - a nutmeg seed, encased in a delicate but slightly gory-looking lacy red layer called an aril. The aril can be dried and ground into the spice mace, which has a stronger, spicier profile than nutmeg. The nutmeg seeds are dried, then can be either ground or grated into a powder, or distilled to produce a fragrant, woody oil.

What are the benefits of nutmeg oil?

  • A sharp but sweet aroma with warming, spiced notes.
  • A friend to breakout-prone skin, thanks to its antimicrobial properties.
  • Contains eugenol, an anti-inflammatory compound that can help temporarily ease aches, itches and swelling.

Where do we source nutmeg oil?

At Lush, we source nutmeg oil from two origins. One supplier is a family-run business that collects seeds across farms in Sri Lanka, and the other sources the Cochin nutmeg variety from India. Nutmeg oil is produced by steam distillation of the dried kernels of the Myristica fragrans plant.
