Sweet-smelling vanilla pods are soaked in humectant propylene glycol, creating a soothing and conditioning ingredient for the skin.

Vanilla beans (pods) are the dried unripe fruits of the Vanilla planifolia orchid, which can grow in most tropical areas of the world, near the equator. Each blossom produces a single bean that is put through a complex curing process before resembling the black-brown fragrant spice we all know.

Vanillin is a chemical compound that occurs naturally in the pods and makes up most of the characteristic vanilla scent. Studied over the past decades for cosmetic use, vanillin has shown antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties.

The fragrant beans are sourced in Madagascar and India and then soaked in rapeseed oil-derived propylene glycol at Lush’s manufacturing sites. Propylene glycol is a syrupy liquid that has no colour, smell or taste, which makes it a great carrier for other ingredients. A humectant, it absorbs and retains the properties of vanilla, but also the moisture contained in the finished product, to then bring them to the skin.
