Usnea barbata

Benefici

Natural

Imagine Treebeard, the oldest of the ents, heading to the river for a good wash. He’d probably grab a nice clump of lichen from a branch and rub it all over, with the promise of cleansed and soothed bark.

Where do we get it?

Old man’s beard is harvested in the United States and purchased by Lush through a UK distributor. The lichen is tied in a cloth and soaked in hot water to make the infusion, like a good old tea.

With seven manufacturing sites across the globe, this information may vary depending on where your Lush products were made.

What are the benefits for your skin?

  • Calms inflammation.
  • Cleanses, thanks to its antimicrobial properties.
  • May improve wound healing.

Unique stories

We see lichens everywhere, on walls, trees and rocks, and yet we know so little about them. The members of the genus Usnea mainly grow on trees. They are mistakenly thought to contribute to their decay when in reality they just grow better on already ill trees as their less dense foliage allows light to pass through. Old man’s beard (Usnea barbata) clings to branches and hangs down like a lock of hair. It grows all over the world and has been used in traditional medicine for centuries. It is a good bioindicator as it only thrives where the air quality is excellent.
