Scented trees (not for your car)
The pine family regroups many conifers such as pines, firs and spruces. With the exception of a few varieties, the trees of that family are evergreen, growing in the Northern Hemisphere and reproducing by shedding pollen into the air, hoping to reach female cones. The Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) is the most widespread pine tree in the world.
The chemicals responsible for the scent of conifers such as pine are called terpenes. They differ slightly depending on the species, but pinene is the most common one. Pine extracts in perfumery appear to be as old as (human) times since, according to archaeological findings, the Mesopotamians used it in fragrance or incense blends, along with other tree resins.
