Bamboos are fast-growing perennials of the Poaceae family found in tropical and sub-tropical areas. The upright, woody stem is hollow on the inside and characterised by a series of nodes distributed along the length. Nodes vary according to species, climate and soil.

In East and South-East Asia, bamboos are grown for a variety of purposes. The leaves can be used as fodder for livestock and fibre for the manufacture of fine paper, while the stems make good furniture, utensils and decorations. 

It's hard to talk about bamboo without mentioning pandas. While the black and white bears possess the digestive system of a carnivore, they decided millions of years ago to eat almost nothing but bamboo, more precisely between 10 and 15 kilos of it per day. A true love story between a plant and an animal, defying all nutritional logic.
