Carrots are biennial plants belonging to the Apiaceae family, producing edible taproots of different colours. In the 7th century, a purple variety already existed in Afghanistan and was later introduced to Europe around 1100. It was not until the 16th and 17th centuries that the orange type began to be cultivated in the Netherlands in tribute to the emblematic colour of their royal family.
