This soothing and balancing ingredient is made in-house by adding French lavender oil to water. Though diluted for topical use on skin (essential oils are often too powerful if used alone) the water harnesses enough of the oil’s properties and its floral fragrance to impart benefits when used.
Lavandula angustifolia is a perennial, shrub-like plant that's part of the mint family. Many products are derived from this, with its oil being the most versatile. It's obtained from the flowering tops of the plants through steam distillation.
René-Maurice Gattefossé, a French chemist from the early 20th century, accidentally discovered lavender oil's soothing and healing properties. Legend has it that he severely burned his hands during tests in his laboratory and immediately immersed them in lavender oil (which was nearest to him at the time). His hands healed so well that he became passionate about the properties of essential oils, and is now recognised as the ‘father of modern aromatherapy’.
If you’re struggling with sleepless nights then lavender is a great ally to have when trying to switch off before bed. Its flower is filled with linalool, a substance known for its sedative effects on the nervous system.
Lush buy lavender oils from a French distiller based in sunny Provence, a region in the south of the country. To produce this quality oil they use only the finest, locally harvested flowers.
