Surrounded by legends and spirituality, myrrh has been used for cosmetic purposes, fumigations and embalming since ancient Egypt and is present in many religious texts.

Myrrh resinoid has a sweet warm, balsamic aroma. With notes of amber and spice, it adds a decadent note to perfumes. In fact, the Greek word for myrrh múron also translates as perfume or ointment, which gives us a handy hint to the historic uses of this ancient ingredient.

What are the benefits of myrrh resinoid powder?

  • Antiseptic: you’ll often find myrrh in oral care, as it’s thought to inhibit the growth of bacteria, as well as in other cosmetics to look after various skin woes.
  • Protective and soothing: myrrh has been popular in homoeopathic remedies for centuries for inflammation. It may even have a calming effect on our pain receptors.
  • Emotionally regulating: in aromatherapy, myrrh centres and boosts focus, encouraging a grounded sense of inner confidence.
  • Packaging-free formulas: using myrrh resinoid in powdered form means it can be used in our naked innovations, such as bath bombs.

What is myrrh?

Myrrh is a yellow liquid that flows freely from cracks and cuts in the bark of the Commiphora myrrha tree. This liquid gum quickly oxidises when it is exposed to the air, forming shiny, hard nuggets. Steam distillation is used to extract myrrh essential oil from this hardened gum, while the resinoid is obtained by solvent extraction. The resinoid can be ground into a powder.
