The oil is extracted from the seeds of the evening primrose plant (Oenothera biennis), which is actually a relative of willow grasses and not primroses. Evening primrose oil is known to calm inflammation when applied topically and is therefore often recommended for acne and eczema. Its soothing and humectant properties are attributed to gamma-linoleic (GLA) and linoleic acids. It is said that GLA also enhances the antioxidant properties of vitamin E.
