Lush generally purchases spices, herbs and seeds through a distributor. They source products from different countries depending on seasonality and stock availability.

What are the benefits of saffron?

• It contains crocin, a carotenoid and an antioxidant that is said to help skin cells fight oxidative stress and thus keep the skin radiant and firm.
• Crocin is also a natural pigment that colours the products with a yellow-to-red hue.

‘The most expensive spice in the world’ is another name for saffron, unchanged despite the centuries. Saffron is the thin stigma of the Crocus sativus flower, a deep-red wisp that stands out against the light purple colour of the petals. With three stigmas per crocus and a flowering period that only lasts two weeks a year, it's no wonder saffron is so expensive. Many legends have surrounded the plant throughout history. To pick just one - it is said that in 15th century Nuremberg (a city in Germany that grew and traded the spice at that time) you could be burned or buried alive if you tried to sell fake or adulterated saffron.
