Watermelons are large, oval fruits of the gourd family (Cucurbitaceae), native to the desert regions of tropical and subtropical Africa. Composed of more than ninety-two per cent water, these colourful and refreshing fruits are consumed around the world to quench thirst on hot days and are of great help in areas where clean water is scarce.

Inside their leathery, green rind, watermelons not only have juicy red flesh, but also many tiny black seeds. The oil is pressed from these seeds and contains antioxidant vitamins A and E as well as beneficial minerals such as magnesium, iron, copper, and potassium.
