Active Against New Legislation
We are a part of the EU and one of the interesting things about the EU is it is the most effective entity at passing legislation.
The EU is the envy of the rest of the world in that it is drafting and passing large amounts of regulations that effect our day to day lives. Last time we checked there were approximately 3400 new pieces of legislation passed every year. Whilst that legislation affects us all in some way or another sometimes it effects what we do as a company.
For example the REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) legislation sets a series of end points that chemicals have to be tested for in order to make sure they are safe for use in our daily lives. This is a great idea and no one can argue against its purpose however it would be a mistake if a chemical was deemed safe from animal tests when it was not. This affects us in that the legislation calls for animal testing to be done where no alternatives currently exist eg LD50 Tests are compulsory.
We don’t agree that testing using animals proves that a chemical is safe and therefore we campaign not against REACH but against the animal testing element of the legislation.
