Bergamot oil smells like a 'sunshine in a bottle'; its fresh, sweet and fruity scent recalls a lollipop melting in the mouth under a hot summer sun.

The bergamot tree doesn't like extremes, on the contrary, it enjoys a well-balanced environment and is consequently known as the most delicate citrus tree. The soil needs to be just right (not too dry, moist or chalky) and the weather must be temperate (not too hot, cold, or windy). If those conditions are met, the tree grows yellow-green fruits whose appearance and taste are a bit like an orange and a lime combined.&nbsp;

Since 2005, Lush has sourced bergamot, lemon and mandarin essential oils directly from a family business that has been producing citrus oils for three generations. While the lemons and mandarins thrive under the sun of Sicily, the bergamot fruits are grown in Reggio Calabria, Southern Italy. Oh, we all know what lemon is, surely!? Okay, for those of you who don’t, it’s a fruit that grows on a small, slightly thorny, evergreen tree that belongs to the Rutaceae family. The lemon tree typically grows in Italy, Asia and East India, and produces highly fragrant blossoms and shiny leaves as well as this bright yellow, oval-shaped citrus treat.&nbsp;

Since 2005, Lush has sourced bergamot, lemon and mandarin essential oils directly from a family business that have been producing citrus oils for three generations. While the lemons and mandarins thrive under the sun of Sicily, the bergamot fruits are grown in Reggio Calabria, Southern Italy. Grown without pesticides, the lemons are collected by hand and pressed entirely with their peel. The resulting liquid then goes through a centrifugal process that separates the oil from the juice.&nbsp;

To say that buchu oil has a sweet scent would be simplistic. Its minty, fruity, green and camphorous notes make it way more complex and subtle.

Buchu is an aromatic shrub native to South Africa, where it’s been used as a medicinal and cosmetic ingredient by the indigenous people for centuries. Its small round leaves grow symmetrically, making Buchu a very aesthetic plant. It was introduced to Europe and the United States as a medicine in the 19th century but received uneven success. Today, buchu leaves and oil are traded mainly for their flavouring and aromatic qualities.

Although buchu’s blackcurrant and minty fragrance is the main reason you can find it in Lush products, its benefits for the skin shouldn’t go unnoticed. It is, in fact, known for its antiseptic and soothing properties.

Buchu is native to the Cederberg region of South Africa and this is where Lush purchases the essential oil. Located on a UNESCO World Heritage site, the family business grows buchu and rooibos which they process themselves into oil and other products, ensuring high standards. They believe in sustainable agricultural practices that promote biodiversity.
