Humble flowers with super soothing powers.

There are many species of chamomile flowers, and they’re sometimes hard to differentiate from one another - even experts struggle! At Lush, we use two types, easily identifiable and well known in European folk medicine: the German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla syn. Matricaria recutita) which resembles a daisy, and the Roman chamomile (Anthemis nobilis) that looks like a fuzzy ball of white petals.&nbsp;

Originally white in colour, the German chamomile flowers release a blue pigment when distilled into an essential oil. This is due to&nbsp; an anti-inflammatory compound that forms during steam distillation, called chamazulene. Hence the name: chamomile blue oil.

The flowers’ oils are believed to promote calm and restful sleep when inhaled. They’re often coupled with lavender as they share similar properties and complement each other scents.

Chamomile crops are so fragile that Lush buyers always need to have backup suppliers in case our current ones are unable to produce the amount we need. Aloe is thought to be one of the oldest folk remedies, well known for its healing qualities.&nbsp;

Aloe is the genus of several succulent plant species that grow well in dry soils and tropical climates. At Lush, we use three different types: Aloe vera (which means ‘true aloe’, syn. Aloe barbadensis), Aloe secundiflora and Aloe ferox. All of them have similar properties and are cultivated for medicinal and ornamental purposes. Clear gel and latex can be extracted from them.

And if those brilliant things weren’t enough, the cooling sensation you get when applied to the skin is excellent for reducing swelling and calming burns.

Depending on the species and if it’s fresh or dried, the aloe in Lush products can come from many different places in the world - mainly in Africa and North America. What are the benefits of seaweeds in cosmetics?

On this last point, it should be noted that certain seaweeds have gelling properties, especially <a href="https://www.lush.com/uk/en/i/agar-agar">agar-agar</a> and <a href="https://www.lush.com/uk/en/i/irish-moss">Irish moss</a> (from which <a href="https://www.lush.com/uk/en/i/carrageenan-extract">a powder called carrageenan</a> is extracted). When combined with the right ingredients, they can help create a wide range of textures and shapes for our products such as <a href="https://www.lush.com/uk/en/c/shower-jellies">our shower jellies</a>.

Lush was founded in Poole, a coastal town in southern England where it is still strongly rooted in today. Outside the headquarters, massive seagulls soar and cry, and salty waves crash onto the quay. Charcoal&nbsp;deeply cleanses the skin and gives&nbsp;a gorgeous glow. Its soft, dry texture means it gently exfoliates, cleanses and polishes teeth, and helps to absorb excess oils. In&nbsp;deodorants, it effectively absorbs sweat and limits the growth of body odour producing bacteria.&nbsp;

Unlike most of the UK's charcoal (which is imported) the charcoal we use is produced close to Lush&nbsp;headquarters in Dorset,&nbsp;to encourage&nbsp;local industries and make&nbsp;sure it has less environmental impact.

Making charcoal is an ancient industry, which is not much practised today. Trees such as oak, ash, hazel and chestnut are grown in coppices managed by the Forestry Commission. These are then piled up and seasoned for some time before being stacked in kilns and burned for up to sixteen hours until the wood is carbonised and ground into a fine black powder.

While the larger pieces are sold as fuel, Lush buy&nbsp;smaller pieces to ensure no charcoal is wasted. They are then ground into a cosmetic grade fine powder. The UK produced charcoal is of the highest quality being of about 90% carbon (that’s the stuff that makes charcoal so effective).
