Hydrosol from Bulgaria

Lush UK, Australia and New Zealand* purchase chamomile water from a Bulgarian producer. One of the most common methods of obtaining flower water, other than simply infusing the petals, is to collect the water produced during the essential oil distillation process. This takes place in a still where chamomile heads are heated in water. Soon, steam rises, full of essential oils. It exits the still through a cooling pipe that helps separate the oil from the water. This is how you end up with rose essential oil floating on the top of fragrant chamomile-scented water, also called hydrosol, hydrolate, or distillate.

Our supplier is located in the heart of the beautiful Rose Valley near Kazanlak, Bulgaria. The fertile and rich land allows them to grow lavender, pine, mint and different varieties of roses and chamomiles, from which they produce various raw materials like essential oils and floral waters.

*With seven manufacturing sites across the globe, this information may vary depending on where your Lush products were made.

The Lush way

Another method for getting chamomile water is to disperse chamomile blue oil in water. We sometimes do that in our products, using a few other natural materials to mix oil and water. It is our way of getting a lighter, gentler version of the fragrant oil. Learn more about chamomile blue oil and where it is sourced here.
