Copaifera officinalis

Benefits

Natural

Known by some as ‘gold of the Amazon’, copaiba oil is a unique extract that has been used in traditional medicine by indigenous communities for centuries.

Historically described as ‘miracle oil’, indigenous warriors would smear copaiba oil across their weary, aching bodies. Copaiba isn’t just favoured by Amazonian people either - wild animals have been known to seek shelter in the trees, and rub themselves against the bark when injured.

A viable alternative to CBD

Sometimes compared to CBD, though entirely unrelated, copaiba oil is thought to possess similar potential for use in pain management. The main reason is that, like CBD, copaiba oil contains high levels of plant compounds (namely β-Caryophyllene and β-Bisabolene) that bind to our CB2 receptors, which are thought to help regulate the body’s natural inflammatory response. This makes it a great option for tired, achy bodies. Another similarity to CBD? It does this without inducing any form of ‘high’. So could copaiba indeed be a ‘miracle plant’? The truth is that more advanced research is needed to scientifically prove its pain-managing potential, but initial reports sound hopeful. We say, watch this space!

What makes copaiba oil so good?

  • Helps with the discomfort of body aches
  • Soothing for uncomfortable skin
  • Strengthens hair to minimise breakage
  • Boosts moisture-retention

With a bounty of essential fatty acids, copaiba oil boasts many cosmetic benefits, as well as being a rich source of anti-inflammatory compounds. This deeply penetrating oil helps combat uncomfortable, dehydrated skin, encourages a radiant glow, and may even soothe insect bites. Fatty acids work wonders for hair, too, helping reduce split ends for stronger, healthier locks.

What is copaiba oil?

The copaiba (pronounced koh-pah-ee-bah) tree is grown in tropical rainforest climates across South America. With honeycomb-structured wood and reaching heights of almost 40ft, copaiba trunks are tapped to produce an oleoresin (a natural combo of resin and fatty oils). This oleoresin, or balm, can be steam-distilled to produce an essential oil rich in benefits for our skin, hair, and body.

Where does Lush source copaiba oil?

Lush sources copaiba oil from a Brazilian supplier dedicated to innovation and rainforest preservation. They partner directly with local communities, aiming to safeguard natural resources while improving the quality of life of farmers and their families by generating a sustainable source of income.
