Wintergreen oil is often found in oral care products for its sweet, refreshing taste but also for its anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties that keep the mouth calm and clean.
As the name suggests, the American wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens) is native to North America. It is an aromatic shrub whose leaves, berries and flowers have been picked and prepared for centuries for their medicinal properties.
The oil is distilled from the leaves and contains 98% methyl salicylate. This substance is closely related to aspirin and shares similar properties. It also gives the plant its minty, sweet scent that pairs well with mint oils or menthol crystals.
