Ingredient
Roman Chamomile Oil
Anthemis nobilis
Benefits
Natural
Roman chamomile is a small but mighty flower. The oil is renowned for its calming effects on the body and mind, as well as its apple-like fragrance.
Native to western Europe, and rarely reaching over nine inches tall, the Roman chamomile plant creates a fine, ferny carpet when planted. The yellow and white daisy-like flowers are used to obtain the essential oil, which, surprisingly, turns a pale blue colour during distillation.
What are the benefits of Roman chamomile oil?
In the 10th century, chamomile was one of nine sacred herbs recorded in the Lacnunga, an ancient Anglo-Saxon herbal manuscript. The flower has been used throughout history to aid wounds, burns, and sunburn. Its antibacterial properties make it deodorising and cleansing, so it is perfect for use in soaps and oral hygiene products.
- Soothes skin irritation
- Antifungal
- Deeply relaxing
Chamomile is also often used in shampoos and hair treatments as its toning effect helps to bring out subtle golden tones in hair, giving blonde hair a brighter appearance. In aromatherapy, chamomile has long been popular for its calming properties on the mind. It is thought to relieve anxiety and tension and promote restful sleep.
Roman chamomile contains the well-known anti-inflammatory compounds bisabolol and chamazulene, though in lower amounts than its chamomile blue counterpart, giving it a gentler aromatic profile that our perfumers love.
Where do we source our Roman chamomile oil?
This flower’s name is a bit of a misnomer, since it doesn’t come to us from Rome at all. Lush source Roman chamomile oil from the Starke family, long-standing growers and distillers based in Suffolk, UK. Over the last hundred years, four generations of the family have refined their craft, preserving traditional English growing methods. Harvest begins in late summer, and the entire crop is gathered within a tight two-week window to ensure peak quality before being steam distilled on site.
