Juniper is a member of the cypress family Cupressaceae, a coniferous species of trees that are distributed right across the Northern Hemisphere. Some species are cultivated for their bark, which is distilled to produce smoky-scented&nbsp;<a href="https://www.lush.com/uk/en/i/cade-oil">cade oil</a>. Others produce aromatic seed cones, whose fleshy scales fuse to resemble a berry. These blue-black ‘berries’ can be used as a spice or steam-distilled to make an essential oil rich in benefits.&nbsp;

What are the common benefits of juniper for the skin and hair?

Juniper is thought to have a balancing effect on sebum levels, helping to regulate oiliness, which can be useful for spot-prone skin and greasy scalps. It is also used in meditation to encourage mental clarity and promote a calm, grounded feeling. <a href="https://www.lush.com/uk/en/i/juniperberry-oil">Juniperberry oil</a> in particular contains various chemical constituents with potential anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties, such as α-pinene and sabinene.&nbsp;

Juniper has held folkloric significance for thousands of years. Across multiple cultures, its branches were burnt and oil used to ward off evil, and juniper oil has even been found in Ancient Egyptian embalming vessels. The herb is widely used for cleansing and protection, and its berries are thought to bring prosperity. Juniper even lent its name to the popular spirit, gin. Gin is an abbreviated form of the Dutch word jenever, meaning juniper, since juniper berries are used in the liquor's production to give it its distinct flavour.&nbsp;

The plant genus Lavandula includes about 47 species of flowering plants. Most famous for ornaments and fragrant extracts is the Lavandula angustifolia species, from which Lush’s lavender oil and absolute are obtained. It is a shrub-like perennial that grows long, slender stems topped with a cluster of purple flowers - small yet very fragrant.

René-Maurice Gattefossé, a French chemist from the early 20th century, accidentally discovered lavender oil's soothing and healing properties. Legend has it that he severely burned his hands during tests in his laboratory and immediately immersed them in lavender oil (which was nearest to him at the time). His hands healed so well that he became passionate about the properties of essential oils, and is now recognised as the ‘father of modern aromatherapy’.

Lush sources lavender oils from a couple of suppliers. <a href="https://www.lush.com/uk/en/a/lavender-under-french-skies">One is based</a> in the warm and sunny region Provence region of France, while the other is an <a href="https://www.lush.com/uk/en/i/organic-lavender-oil">organic-certified Bulgarian distiller</a>.&nbsp;

Oh, we all know what lemon is, surely!? Okay, for those of you who don’t, it’s a fruit that grows on a small, slightly thorny, evergreen tree that belongs to the Rutaceae family. The lemon tree typically grows in Italy, Asia and East India, and produces highly fragrant blossoms and shiny leaves as well as this bright yellow, oval-shaped citrus treat.&nbsp;

Since 2005, Lush has sourced bergamot, lemon and mandarin essential oils directly from a family business that have been producing citrus oils for three generations. While the lemons and mandarins thrive under the sun of Sicily, the bergamot fruits are grown in Reggio Calabria, Southern Italy. Grown without pesticides, the lemons are collected by hand and pressed entirely with their peel. The resulting liquid then goes through a centrifugal process that separates the oil from the juice.&nbsp;
