Although botanists haven't entirely agreed on the origins of the soya bean (Glycine soja), it is believed that the plant derives from a Chinese legume, Glycine ussuriensis. Soya has been eaten and cultivated in China since 2800 BC. Centuries of consumption and creativity have led to a wide variety of uses around the world. It’s been ground to make flour, boiled to make milk, pressed to make oil, coagulated to make tofu, fermented to make miso or tempeh. In fact, there are so many different soy-based foods that <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_soy-based_foods">a Wikipedia list had to be created for them</a>.

Today, the United States and Brazil supply two-thirds of the world's soya production. It is a common misconception that the rise in vegan diets is responsible for the increase in global demand for soya and the deforestation associated with this industry. In reality, livestock feed <a href="https://ourworldindata.org/soy">accounts for just under 80%</a> of the soya market.

What are the benefits of soya in cosmetics?

At Lush, we tend to try almost every food (vegetarian and vegan) we come across to see if it would be good for the skin and hair... and soya offers so many possibilities! We use (or have used) soya milk, milk powder, yoghurt, oil, lecithin, bran, flour and wax, as well as mung beans, tofu and silken tofu.

Our suppliers vary a lot depending on the ingredient, but we can assure you that whatever the source, we never purchase genetically modified soybeans or products derived from them. Your vegan pals may have told you this goes great in porridge - but did you know agave syrup can also serve your skin?

Agave is a succulent plant native to the Americas and Mexico. It’s characterised by rosettes of pale green fleshy leaves ranging from a few centimetres (inches) up to 2m50 (8 feet) high. The agave's core is called the piña and can be processed into a syrup, also called nectar.

If you create a succulent garden and mix aloe and agave species, your visitors may not be able to distinguish one from the other. Although they appeared and evolved on two different continents and are not even close relatives, the two plants share many similarities.

Agave syrup is often used as a honey substitute, not just in vegan cuisine but in Lush products too. Similarly to honey this ingredient:

Sacred to the Aztecs, their mythology states that agave first grew on the tomb of the goddess Mayahuel. Mayahuel was fertile and generous, feeding her four hundred children with her four hundred breasts (beat that, Total Recall!) This metaphorically portrays agave really well, as the plant gives a lot.&nbsp;It is entirely edible – flowers, leaves, stems and sap – but only if cooked or processed in one way or another.&nbsp;Its juice can be fermented and distilled to produce tequila (in the case of the blue agave) and pulque. You can also get syrup from the sap and make rope from the fibres.

The European olive tree (Olea europaea) has thrived for millennia under the hot sun of the Mediterranean basin. It grows the famous small, green fruit known as olive, prized for its taste and richness in oil. Olive trees are slow-growing and can have a very long lifespan. Indeed, the oldest known in the world are in Lebanon and are believed to be 6,000 years old. SIX. THOUSAND.&nbsp;(gobsmacked emoji)

What are the benefits of olive oil for the skin and hair?

The oil’s lightweight feel is due to its <a href="https://www.lush.com/uk/en/i/squalane">squalene</a> content, a compound that can also be found in human sebum. ‘Accepted’ well by the skin, it allows the oil to help restore a healthy level of moisture.

Olive oil contains some of the most potent antioxidants in the world, namely vitamin E, hydroxytyrosol (a plant polyphenol) and oleic acid. These compounds are thought to help the skin cells fight against the oxidising action of free radicals. This means that they could help the skin stay firm and healthy for longer. Besides, olives, olive leaves, and olive oil have shown very promising anti-tumour action and protection against cancer when used at a certain level and in specific conditions.

At Lush, we use a lot of moisturising olive oil, but we also purchase the lesser-known olive leaf absolute to complement some of our perfumes. Extracted by solvent from the green-grey leaves of the tree, it has a refreshing herbal scent with a hint of fruity aroma and bitterness.

Lush purchases olive leaf absolute from Egypt, where the leaves are trimmed off the trees after the fruit’s harvest. Cut loose, fruit juice, kick off the vitamin boost!

Of all the wild ideas Lush inventors have had since 1995, adding fresh fruit juices to their creations is probably one of the most iconic. They were inspired by the research of Alan Hopking, a medical herbalist, particularly his piece on the benefits of enzymes. Using fresh fruit on the skin seems so logical after all, but it took a while to make it work because they rot so quickly and can spoil the whole formula. Don’t we love a challenge!

It takes a lot of elbow grease but as far as possible we press the fruit ourselves at the factory. Sometimes, however, we have to buy them from other companies, as some fruits require specific machinery and skills that we don't always have.

What are the benefits of fruit juices on the skin and hair?

Each Lush manufacturer has its own fruit and veg supplier, very much like a supermarket! Depending on the time of year, they source products from different countries to try and have availability all year round. They work hard to supply as much organic products as possible and provide the highest quality available the rest of the time.
