Thanks to our local partner in Ghana, we’ve been able to produce our own ylang-ylang essential oil. An aromatic treat for our senses!
Where does Lush source this oil?
This ylang-ylang oil is produced in Swedru, Ghana. Funded by Lush, the plantation is run by a local partner. Over a decade, they converted a pre-existing ylang ylang monoculture plantation into a flourishing, certified organic agroforestry system. The 166 acres of land are spread across various sites and host approximately 8000 ylang ylang trees of differing maturity, growing alongside vanilla vines, passion fruit, black pepper, jasmine, orange, lime, cinnamon, coconuts, and local plants and trees.
As the years passed, we have built a dam to capture rainwater and a distillation facility to produce essential oil on-site. Dead trees are replaced by new ones while trials are regularly carried out to cultivate even more plant species, focusing on the productive ones such as aromatic plants or fruit trees.

What does Ghanaian ylang ylang oil smell like?
Often, essential oils' scent will differ slightly depending on where and how the plant was grown and processed. This is especially true with ylang-ylang oil. Alina, perfumer at Lush describes it for us: “Ylang oils are very versatile and work well in many different types of perfumes. We purchase oils of different grades from the Comoros Islands, but we do also have our source in Ghana. They are similar, but the origin slightly impacts the scent. Our Ghanaian oil has a beautiful sweet and floral profile too, but with a bit more of a depth to it. There’s a spiciness and it is slightly more rounded, not as sharp. Some of the notes remind me of cananga oil as well, just much much more delicate.”
What are the benefits of Ghanaian ylang ylang oil?
This essential oil gives our perfume a beautiful floral aroma, but there is so much more. Ylang ylang has plenty of interesting properties when inhaled or applied to the skin, scalp, and hair. It can also flavour products designed for mouth and oral care! Take a look at all these benefits on this comprehensive page.
