FAQ: Safer Socials

    What is Safer Socials?

Social media has become anti-social. We want to reclaim it! Safer Socials is our campaign to shine a light on the issues caused by social media, and the organizations working toward building safer platforms for everyone. We are advocating for tools that we can all use to moderate our time online and navigate social spaces more safely.

Why is Lush campaigning about social media?

We're all familiar with the harm caused by social media because we, or someone we know, has experienced them. Maybe it's the endless doomscrolling, because these platforms were designed to be addictive. Maybe it's the way our data is being bought and sold as a commodity. Maybe it's the way that these platforms are infringing on our daily privacy. Maybe it's the way hateful content spills from the screens into our streets. And maybe it's the way billionaires are buying up and controlling platforms to subvert democracy and the rule of law. For all of these reasons and more, Lush is campaigning for safer and more secure social media.

What does “Social media isn’t free” mean?

Social media is not free. There is a massive cost to using these platforms, but it's often hidden — like your data being bought and sold without you seeing a single dime. We want to really spell out these costs and guide people to SaferSocials.com, where they can find more information and get involved in the campaign.

Is Lush saying people should stop using social media?

Social media has been (and can again be) a great vehicle for social change and connection. And there are some platforms that are more secure and less driven by a reactionary algorithms or addictive endless scrolls. While we think everyone should take some time to touch grass now and then, our real goal is to make social media platforms safer for people to use.

    What is Ctrl Shower Gummy?

Made to look like the Control key on a standard English language QWERTY keyboard, Ctrl is the first time we're using one of our low-waste shower gummies as a campaign product. Fragranced with the popcorn sweetness of Let The Good Times Roll, we think it'll pop right off the shelves.

How does purchasing Ctrl Shower Gummy support the campaign?

75% of the purchase price (minus the taxes) of Ctrl Shower Gummy goes to organizations working to make social media safer: from campaigning for childhood safety to combating hate speech, building safer spaces, defending democracy and more.

    Which organizations will receive support?

The main organization we're supporting through this campaign is People vs Big Tech. They represent people and organizations from the U.K. and across Europe who are dedicated to building a just, equitable online world, taking action and using their collective voice to fight for the public interest. They believe in a digital world built for empowerment — not brainwashing. For connection — not addiction. For children to grow up with tools designed for discovery and self-expression — not exploitation and isolation. They are fighting against big tech and for the internet everyone, everywhere deserves.

Can I support the campaign without buying the product?

we invite you to visit SaferSocials.com to take action against Big Tech by learning more about the campaign and the organizations we're spotlighting.
