Ingredient
Fresh Cape Gooseberry
Physalis peruviana
Benefits
Natural
Just like potatoes, tomatoes and belladonna, cape gooseberries are a member of the nightshade family.
They are native to South America, where cultivation of the fruit can be traced back to the Incan Empire.
Physalis peruviana is a small, round orange fruit similar in size and shape to a cherry tomato. Each fruit is enveloped in a papery cloak, or calyx, which protects the fruit as it grows.
Cape gooseberries are particularly popular in autumn, perhaps in part thanks to these delicate husks surrounding the bright flame-colored fruit that makes them look like miniature paper lanterns.
