Caraway’s crescent-shaped fruits, commonly known as ‘seeds’, have a pungent, aniseed flavour and aroma, which is why the oil is often used in perfumes or as a breath freshener. It has also antiseptic and anaesthetic effects and can be used to treat gingivitis.

Caraway is a biennial plant that resembles other plants in the carrot, celery and parsley family. It has feathery leaves and small white or pink flowers and has been used as a medicinal herb for centuries.

Pale yellow caraway oil is produced by steam distillation of the dried seeds. It’s a rich source of antioxidants and is believed to be an effective anti-inflammatory.
