The European olive tree (Olea europaea) has thrived for millennia under the hot sun of the Mediterranean basin. It grows the famous small, green fruit known as olive, prized for its taste and richness in oil. Olive trees are slow-growing and can have a very long lifespan. What are the benefits of olive oil for the skin and hair?

The oil’s lightweight feel is due to its <a href="https://www.lush.com/uk/en/i/squalane">squalene</a> content, a compound that can also be found in human sebum. ‘Accepted’ well by the skin, it allows the oil to help restore a healthy level of moisture.

Olive oil contains some of the most potent antioxidants in the world, namely vitamin E, hydroxytyrosol (a plant polyphenol) and oleic acid. These compounds are thought to help the skin cells fight against the oxidising action of free radicals. This means that they could help the skin stay firm and healthy for longer. Besides, olives, olive leaves, and olive oil have shown very promising anti-tumour action and protection against cancer when used at a certain level and in specific conditions.

At Lush, we use a lot of moisturising olive oil, but we also purchase the lesser-known olive leaf absolute to complement some of our perfumes. Extracted by solvent from the green-grey leaves of the tree, it has a refreshing herbal scent with a hint of fruity aroma and bitterness.

Lush purchases olive leaf absolute from Egypt, where the leaves are trimmed off the trees after the fruit’s harvest. The jasmine flower is a delight for the senses! Its scent is powerful, sensual and enticing.

Jasmine belongs to the large olive family (Oleaceae). It is native to tropical regions of Eurasia, and Oceania. The jasmine flower is white or pale yellow, star-shaped and extremely fragrant. They open at night to release their sensual scent. Thousands of jasmine flowers are processed through solvent extraction to produce just one kilogram of jasmine absolute, which is a thick, dark orange liquid with a rich, floral aroma.

Jasmine was brought to Europe in the 16th century and became a staple ingredient in the perfume industry. Every August, a jasmine festival is held in Grasse, France, during which revellers scatter jasmine water and flowers over celebrating crowds and the town comes alive with music, events and visitors from all over the world.

Lush gets jasmine from many different places around the world such as India and Egypt. The flowers are ideally picked at sunrise when they are the most fragrant. Ylang-ylang’s flowers diffuse a heady, sweet and floral scent that is often recommended to calm the mind. The cananga tree, also called ylang-ylang or ilang-ilang, is a tropical plant native to Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. It can grow very tall in the wild, averaging 12 meters (40 feet). In British English, ylang-ylang is pronounced ee-lang ee-lang. In Tagalog, an old language of the Philippines, it means ‘flower of the flowers’.&nbsp;

The tree’s branches are quite flexible and are often positioned vertically and pruned by farmers to ease harvest. Flowers bloom nearly all year round, hanging from stalks. Their drooping, long and narrow petals are thick and wavy - and wonderfully fragrant! They start off green but reach their optimal scent when turning yellow.

Lush uses ylang-ylang essential oil in various products, ranging from perfumes to bath bombs and hair conditioners. The essential oil is steam-distilled from the petals, and the process can last up to 20 hours! We also use a fair amount of ylang-ylang absolute, which is extracted from the petals as well, but using solvents.

Hemp is a flowering plant with thin, serrated leaves, also known as Cannabis sativa. Hemp grows incredibly quickly and has been cultivated for thousands of years as a food source, as well as for its fibres and the rich oil of its seeds. Archaeological evidence of hemp exists across many ancient cultures, where its fibres were used to make things such as textiles, rope and paper.

Hemp seeds can be pressed for their oil, soaked in water to create a milky infusion, or even used whole in products to create a natural exfoliant.

What are the benefits of hemp in cosmetics?

Hemp is naturally rich in fatty acids, which help to look after the skin and hair. It offers effective moisturisation to keep the skin feeling hydrated, while simultaneously balancing oil production, which helps to avoid blocked pores. Rich in linoleic and oleic acids, hemp can help to give skin a youthful, healthy glow.&nbsp;

Hemp possesses anti-inflammatory properties, partly due to its gamma-linoleic acid (GLA) content, which are said to help with muscle and joint pain when applied topically. It is thought to help relieve the painful symptoms of swelling and certain skin conditions, such as eczema. 

What is the difference between hemp and CBD?

Hemp and CBD both come from the same species of plant, Cannabis sativa. CBD oil is made using the stalks, leaves and flowers of the hemp plant, whereas what we refer to as ‘hemp’ comes specifically from the seed of the plant. Hemp seeds share some of the nutrient-rich properties of the rest of the plant, but they do not contain the CBD compound. Neither hemp nor CBD contain tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, a psychoactive compound.&nbsp;
