Oh honey, honey! Made by hardworking honeybees from floral nectar, this sticky, sweet ingredient has a multitude of incredible properties. You’ll find honey in one of our bestselling soaps, Honey I Washed the Kids, as well as across other ranges.

What is honey made of?

Honeybees collect sugar-rich nectar from flowers and carry it to their hives, where the worker bees convert it into honey. Half a kilogram of honey contains the essence of about two million flowers. The colour, fragrance and properties of honey vary depending on the variety of plant from which nectar is foraged. Bees need to make thousands of round trips to collect nectar, and a single bee produces only about a teaspoon of honey during its lifetime.

Animal Welfare

At Lush, we agree that the modern honey industry treats bees like farmed animals. To ensure bee welfare is respected in our supply chain, we work with beekeepers who understand the importance of managing hives with consideration and of working in a minimally invasive way. We do not allow the use of harmful practices such as queen wing clipping or artificial rearing.

Where possible, we aim to work directly with beekeepers, and we always ask for full traceability and adherence to our high standards. We actively encourage and select suppliers who go beyond organic beekeeping and implement regenerative practices that positively impact local wildlife and the hives’ environment.

What are the benefits of honey?

It's not a question of what is honey good for, it's a question of what isn't honey good for... Honey is a total powerhouse, and it fulfills different purposes across our formulas.

  • Supports the skin barrier: honey is naturally antibacterial and antimicrobial, helping protect with minimal interference to your microbiome.
  • Humectant: by attracting and retaining moisture, honey softens and conditions our skin and hair.
  • Non-comedogenic: thanks to its water-soluble structure, honey hydrates without blocking pores, making it a great option for not drying out breakout-prone skin.
  • Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant: applied throughout history to burns and wounds, honey soothes the skin and is thought to decrease inflammation.
  • Self-preserving: its remarkable antimicrobial and humectant properties mean that honey also contributes to the preservation of products.
  • Aroma: ranging from deeply floral to sugary sweet, scent can vary depending on supplier and the bees’ nectar source.

Why are bees important?

There are at least 20,000 species of bees across the world, and they can be found on every continent apart from Antarctica. They are essential to our ecosystem, pollinating plants that provide habitat and food for other insects, birds and mammals. Not all bee species make honey though, in fact there are only 11 types of bees classed as honeybees. Honeybees turn nectar into honey to sustain them over winter, as it lasts a lot longer without spoiling. Healthy bee colonies can make two to three times the amount of honey they need, meaning that beekeepers can harvest the extra honey without disrupting the bees.

Where does Lush source honey from?

Here at Lush, we source our honey from far and wide. We work with beekeepers located right on our doorstep in the UK, as well as across the globe. You can explore some of our suppliers in more detail by clicking the variety of honey below:
