Stemming from an exotic flower, passion fruits are believed to have been first described by Spanish missionaries of South America in the early 16th century, who saw symbolic references to the Passion of the Christ in the flower and named the plant after it.

The family Passifloraceae includes many climbing plants producing flowers of incredibly complex beauty and sometimes round, egg-shaped fruits, which can have various colours and tastes. Lush uses the purple passion fruit (Passiflora edulis), a delicious delicacy native to South America.
