You say tomato, I say tomato, we all read tomato… and we’re still none the wiser.
Tomatoes are a member of the infamous nightshade family, which groups many a veg basket favourite, including potato, pepper and aubergine. And at risk of starting an argument… tomatoes are technically classified as a fruit and a berry, not a vegetable. With thousands of varieties, tomatoes come in all shapes, colours and sizes, though they are, of course, most famous for their vivid red.
How is tomato extract made?
We make tomato extract in-house, using fresh whole tomatoes. We soak tomatoes in hot water and either strain to create a light infusion or boil until half of the water has evaporated, leaving a more concentrated decoction.
What are the benefits of tomatoes?
- Hydrating
- Cooling
Made up of 93% water and rich in lycopene and vitamin C, as well as naturally astringent acids, tomatoes offer both light exfoliation and soothing properties. It turns out they’re as refreshing in your cosmetics as they are on your salad plate!
Where do we source fresh tomatoes?
When available, Lush UK* source tomatoes from a British supplier based on the Isle of Wight. There, our supplier has been combining age-old techniques with modern innovation for over 15 years to grow luscious tomatoes in the rich soil of the Arreton Valley.
*With several manufacturing sites across the globe, this information may vary depending on where your Lush products were made.
