Acacia gum is an emulsifier that allows both oil and water-based ingredients to mix. It is also a natural film-forming agent which means that it stays on the surface of the skin and hair to better coat, condition and protect them. It is water-soluble and soothing for the skin.
Native to Africa, India and America’s southern states, the acacia is a small and thorny tree that can grow up to 12 metres tall. When a tree is damaged it triggers a protective mechanism called ‘gummosis’ which consists of secreting a gum through the wound.
The colourless, tasteless and odourless gum has been known and used for thousands of years, with records dating back as early as Egyptian times 4000 years ago, where it was used to thicken paints. Also known as gum arabic, it is nowadays a key component in candies, glazes and chewing gum where it acts as a thickening agent and stabiliser.
