Cardamom has been cultivated since ancient times; even the famous Greek physician Hippocrates wrote about the spice’s supposed therapeutic properties. Elettaria cardamomum is a perennial plant native to Sri Lanka and India that produces green seed pods containing up to 20 tiny seeds.
