Lactuca sativa encompasses many types of lettuce, including red oakleaf. So named for its resemblance to the sinuate foliage of oak trees, red oakleaf lettuce's deep brownish red colour distinguishes it from the bright green of most other varieties. It is rich in vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin K, as well as antioxidants such as beta-carotene.
