Attracted by the sweet fragrance of the mānuka bush's flowers, honeybees hurry to collect their precious nectar. The honey obtained from this frantic foraging is renowned for its antimicrobial and wellness properties.

What is mānuka honey?

Mānuka honey comes specifically from nectar collected by honeybees from the sweet-smelling flowers of the mānuka plant, which is carried back to the bees’ hives to be converted by worker bees into honey. Mānuka bushes (Leptospermum scoparium) are part of the Myrtle family, the same botanical family as tea tree, and are native to New Zealand.

What are the benefits of mānuka honey?

  • Anitmicrobial
  • Humectant
  • Protects and repairs

The benefits of mānuka honey on the skin and hair are vast, as it contains lots of nutrients, is antimicrobial and antioxidant and has historically been used to aid wound healing over the centuries. In skincare, this makes honey valuable for helping to repair the skin's moisture barrier while keeping it clean.

Honey is imperishable and a natural humectant, meaning it attracts and retains moisture. This is good news in cosmetics as it protects the skin and hair, keeps them moisturised and conditioned, while contributing to the preservation of product formulae. In haircare, humectants can also boost volume by making the hair strand appear fuller and feel stronger.

What makes mānuka honey so special?

If you’ve ever perused rows of honey in the shops, you might’ve wondered why mānuka honey in particular is so expensive. One thing that makes manuka so special is a naturally occurring compound known as methylglyoxal (MGO), which gives mānuka its exceptional antimicrobial properties. The higher the MGO, the stronger those properties are. Lush source an MGO50 honey, which is the common grade used in cosmetics.

Where does Lush source mānuka honey?

The mānuka honey in Lush products originates from New Zealand. It is harvested from hives located in the beautiful and sometimes challenging terrain of North Canterbury, on the east coast of New Zealand's South Island. We work with this producer as their ethics align closely with ours, with beekeepers who prioritise the welfare of their bees, using minimally invasive techniques and managing the beehives with the utmost respect. Once the fragrant honey is collected, Lush’s batches are sent to Scotland for filtering and processing to obtain the proper consistency for use in our products.
