Originally produced from sugar cane in the Guianas, this lightly-coloured sugar offers our products a touch of comforting sweetness.
Where do we get it?
The demerara sugar that Lush UK purchases is made in the northeast of England. Our supplier has been producing sugar for over a century and has used that time to develop strong relationships with local sugar beet growers and their communities. They support sustainable agriculture, beet yield research, local initiatives and charities.
Thanks to their four processing plants, they have reduced the transport of beets to less than 28 miles from field to factory. They have also succeeded in creating a range of ‘co-products’ such as power generation and bioethanol.
What makes demerara sugar so special is its light golden colour. This is achieved by adding a bit of syrupy, dark and strong-tasting molasses to white granulated sugar. While the white sugar comes from local beets, the molasses is obtained from sugar cane grown in the United States.
With seven manufacturing sites across the globe, this information may vary depending on where your Lush products were made.
What are the benefits of demerara sugar in cosmetics?
- Humectant, sugar helps the skin retain moisture.
- Exfoliating, it scrubs away dead skin cells when rubbed on the skin.
- Delicious, it contributes to our product's lovely sweet scent and, eventually, taste.
