Simmondsia chinensis

Benefits

Natural

Born and raised in Peru, this organic and cold-pressed oil conditions the hair and moisturises the skin.

Where does Lush purchase this jojoba oil?

Lush purchases jojoba oil from a producer who cultivates organic jojoba seeds in Peru. The seeds are then sent to a facility in Panama where they are cold-pressed to produce Jojoba Oil.

Sun, sand, mountains, jojoba

Our supplier has five farms in the Ica region of southern Peru and permanently hires seventy people. The area is mostly desert, and the jojoba bushes provide important habitats for rodents and birds. The bushes thrive incredibly well in hot, dry conditions but still need additional water. This is provided by a drip irrigation system, one of the most efficient and sparing ways to water crops, fed by water from the Andes. The plants also benefit from homemade compost and fertilisers.

Special harvesting machines shake the jojoba branches so the nuts fall to the floor without harming the trees. The nuts are then raked into piles by hand for collection, sieved, put into large bags, and transported to each farm’s cleaning sites. There, any remaining leaves are removed and the nuts are left to dry, then bagged again and shipped to the processing site in Panama.

What are the benefits of jojoba oil for the skin and hair?

  • Jojoba oil is an excellent moisturiser and emollient for the skin and scalp.
  • Due to jojoba oil's affinity with our own sebum, it is more readily absorbed by the top layer of the skin and helps to balance sebum production.
  • It conditions the hair by lightly coating it, adding shine and combability.

What are the benefits of the cold-pressing method?

Cold-pressing is the most natural method of obtaining oil from a plant’s fruits or seeds. No heat, solvents, or other techniques are applied to the raw materials except mechanical pressure. This yields a pure and unaltered oil, often aromatic and colourful.
