Vanilla beans (pods) are the dried unripe fruits of the Vanilla planifolia orchid, which can grow in most tropical areas of the world, near the equator. Each blossom produces a single bean that is put through a complex curing process before resembling the black-brown fragrant spice we all know.
Vanillin is a chemical compound that occurs naturally in the pods and makes up most of the characteristic vanilla scent. Studied over the past decades for cosmetic use, vanillin has shown antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties.
The fragrant beans are sourced from the Ndali farm in Uganda and then soaked in rapeseed oil-derived propylene glycol at Lush’s manufacturing sites. Propylene glycol is a syrupy liquid that has no colour, smell or taste, which makes it a great carrier for other ingredients. A humectant, it absorbs and retains the properties of vanilla, but also the moisture contained in the finished product, to then bring them to the skin.
