Log Your Litter-Pick

There is an estimated 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic debris in the ocean.

Wowza! That is terrible news for our oceans and for us! Let’s get grabbin’ that garbage to protect our beautiful home.

Did you know? In 2018 Lush co-founder, Rowena Bird, launched a litter-pick challenge for her Lush colleagues - to pick up 60 tonnes of rubbish to celebrate her 60th birthday!

We got stuck in and, despite Covid lockdowns and all the trials of the past few years, we have collectively removed over 32 tonnes of plastic and other litter from beaches, parks, streets and rivers around the world!

Despite the efforts of so many individuals and groups around the globe, the issue of litter seems never-ending. In fact, it is estimated that 2 million items of litter are dropped in the UK every day!

That’s why we are continuing to log how much litter we collect as a business but we are increasing our clean-up game and inviting our community to join us now too.

How can you join the Trash Dash?

We have a brand new online portal where anyone can log their litter pick details and contribute to this 60 tonne goal. Log Your Lush Trash Dash Here.

How to stay safe

How you choose to do your Trash Dash will depend on how many of you there are (are you organising as part of a group or simply popping out on your lunch break for a 2 minute clean?), where you are picking and how (do you have purpose-made litter grabbers or just donning gloves and getting stuck in?) It is best to make sure you have all the necessary gear ready, before promoting your event - including any risk assessments and Health & Safety briefings if you’re part of an organisation. There are many great resources out there, including litter-picking guides and community event inspiration. Check out this great site from Peterborough Environment City Trust, UK, to kickstart your ideas.

Don't forget those cigarette butts! They are the most littered item and contain plastic and toxic ingredients.
