To create this extract, marshmallow roots are soaked in water, releasing their natural mucilage to create a syrupy infusion.

What is marshmallow root?

Marshmallow gets its name from the marshy wetlands where the plant thrives. Its botanical name, Althaea officinalis, also give us a clue to its uses; it comes from the Greek althainein, which means ‘to heal’. The roots of the marshmallow plant produce a thick, sticky substance called mucilage, which can be used as a skin softener. Marshmallow mucilage has been used for thousands of years for its therapeutic benefits, as well as being whipped into a soft spongey confectionary - a perfect example of how some of our favourite sweets (not to mention cosmetics) are inspired by restorative botanicals.
