Even if the colours of the beautiful safflowers can vary from yellow to dark orange, the petals become red when dried and closely resemble saffron. They are full of yellow and red pigments that can be extracted and used as natural dyes.

Botanically related to lettuce, sunflowers, and daisies, safflowers were originally cultivated for their flowers, which were used for textile dyes, and only later for their oil-rich seeds.
