“WE SELL CBD” printed on the gigantic photo of a cannabis leaf is a curious hieroglyph that has been popping up in every shop window for the past few years (depending on where you live, of course). But, what is CBD? Also known as cannabidiol, it is a non-intoxicating, non-addictive component of the hemp plant.

What are the benefits of CBD in cosmetics?

CBD oil has a faint herbal scent and studies have suggested that it can positively affect the mood when inhaled. Used topically, it seems to have anti-inflammatory properties.

Cannabis is a genus of beautiful and useful plants from the same family as hops. The real star of this genus is hemp, also known as Cannabis sativa, a flowering plant with thin, serrated leaves. Thought to be native to Central Asia, it’s been cultivated worldwide, either for its branched variety that makes seed oil and good fibres or, for its more aromatic varieties, which can be turned into recreational drugs. Cannabidiol can be extracted from both.

Studied from top to bottom, the many varieties of hemp have revealed their unique compounds throughout the 20th century. We now know that hemp contains around two hundred chemical substances called ‘cannabinoids’, including the well-known tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and the lesser-known cannabidiol (CBD). While THC has been proven to give the weed its psychoactive properties, CBD is considered non-intoxicating and does not create a ‘high’.

Although cannabis is banned in most countries around the world because of the effect of THC, some say it should be legal but tightly regulated as a medicine, due to its potential as a treatment for pain and anxiety. CBD oil's arrival on the market was therefore seen as a miraculous response to this moral and legal conundrum, as the molecule is not addictive but still considered relaxing and soothing by some. Despite the instant fame, the plant extract remains controversial, sometimes out of sheer caution, sometimes out of suspicion about its real effects.

The scent of patchouli is grounding and bewitching, and will transport you to dense Indonesian forests.

Patchouli is a fragrant bushy herb that belongs to the same family as mint. It can grow as high as three feet tall, with purple and white flowers growing from its long stems.

On Saturday, 4th July 1846, the <a href="http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0000051/18460704/033/0001?_=1486388422470">London Daily News</a> advertised: “Viner’s patchouli is confidently recommended as the only remedy known to prevent moth. In foreign countries, the peculiar properties of this Indian perfume are highly appreciated.” This perfectly illustrates how patchouli arrived in England during the Victorian era: the plant's aromatic leaves were slipped into the folds of Indian textiles to avoid the ravages of insects during their journey to other lands. Impregnated with an unmistakable aroma, Indian shawls were sent to Great Britain, where they were all the rage. The ubiquitous scent soon became symbolic of luxury and the mark that distinguished a material of Indian origin.

The scent of patchouli made a comeback in the 1960s, also imported from Asia - but this time in backpacks! The Hippie Trail was a promising mystique adventure and, if lucky, a spiritual enlightenment. An overland round trip of roughly 12,000 miles, this trail took hippies through Istanbul to Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nepal and India. Herbal handbook writer Stephen Orr writes that patchouli’s association with the era is “due to the Asian travels of backpacking hippies, who brought home the scented oil and incense as a reminder of their spiritual awakenings.”

The story also goes that patchouli oil was used to mask the scent of marijuana. In terms of pure usage, it’s plausible: cannabis was a booming business in the American counterculture of the 1960s. It was also suggested that marijuana and patchouli don’t smell all that different and hippies simply wanted their bodies to smell like their bedrooms. An argument can also be made that patchouli smells of fresh soil and roots, an ‘authentic’ scent that recalls hippies’ aspirations to connect with the natural world.

Sandalwood is a distinctly reassuring and grounding scent; it creates the base of many marvellous perfumes.

Sandalwood is an umbrella name for many scented trees, all belonging to the Santalum genus. These evergreen trees can grow up to 50 feet tall and have to be at least 25 years old before the wood is ready for distillation.

There are about 10 different types of sandalwood acress various parts of the world. Its aroma can change slightly depending on the origin.

Because of its popular fragrance and importance in many rites and folk medicine around the globe, sandalwood has been overexploited and the harvesting badly managed for centuries, leaving some species endangered. Although regulations have been made by governments, the high value of the wood still leads to smuggling, counterfeits and corruption, making it very difficult to find sustainable sources and a good oil quality.
