Cut loose, fruit juice, kick off the vitamin boost!

Of all the wild ideas Lush inventors have had since 1995, adding fresh fruit juices to their creations is probably one of the most iconic. They were inspired by the research of Alan Hopking, a medical herbalist, particularly his piece on the benefits of enzymes. Using fresh fruit on the skin seems so logical after all, but it took a while to make it work because they rot so quickly and can spoil the whole formula. Don’t we love a challenge!

It takes a lot of elbow grease but as far as possible we press the fruit ourselves at the factory. Sometimes, however, we have to buy them from other companies, as some fruits require specific machinery and skills that we don't always have.

What are the benefits of fruit juices on the skin and hair?

Each Lush manufacturer has its own fruit and veg supplier, very much like a supermarket! Depending on the time of year, they source products from different countries to try and have availability all year round. They work hard to supply as much organic products as possible and provide the highest quality available the rest of the time. Each producer must comply with our strict policies, just like any of our suppliers.

Blackcurrant shrubs, also called cassis, give a lot. From their juicy fruits to their fragrant flower buds and leaves, it’s more generous than you’d think!

Grapes? Who said grapes? <a href="https://www.lush.com/uk/en/i/currant-infusion">Currants can be a type of grape</a>, that’s true, but blackcurrants aren’t. They’re delicious berries that look like glossy black pearls filled with tasty dark red juice. They grow on a shrub called Ribes nigrum, native to the Northern Hemisphere and from which syrups, liqueurs, leaf infusions, aromatic extracts, and all sorts of tasty goods are produced.

Where can I find blackcurrants in Lush products?

Although we sometimes use a vitamin-rich blackcurrant juice or a pigment-full blackcurrant powder, it is the absolute that we seek most. Interestingly, this fragrancing ingredient is extracted from the plant's buds and not the fruits.

<a href="https://www.lush.com/uk/en/i/blackcurrant-absolute">Blackcurrant absolute</a> has always been at the heart of our iconic fragrance, The Comforter. Alina Gliwinska, one of Lush's perfumers, love this extract: “It has a powerful, deep, fruity, black currant aroma, but it also can be slightly sulphurous and animalic. That is why just a very small amount is needed to bring a natural fruity feel to all fragrances with berries notes.”

We purchase this rare perfume ingredient from a distiller in France.

It’s good to be green. Limes have a sharp, zesty scent and bring the shine!

The key lime grows on the Citrus aurantifolia tree, mainly cultivated in Brazil and Mexico these days although it is native to Southeast Asia. Fruits are usually picked when green and unripe, making them richer in acid and sugar than lemons.&nbsp;

Lush purchases lime oil from a producer in Mexico. The whole fruit, peel included, is pressed to obtain a juice-and-oil emulsion that is then steam distilled to recover the aromatic oil. We also use fresh and dried limes in our products, which can come from different places. Davana is native to India and belongs to the same genus (Artemisia) as famous aromatic plants like absinth and mugwort. It is a small plant that grows to around 60 cm (23 ft) in height and bears silvery-grey to green leaves and many small yellow flowers.

In India, davana is rooted in the folklore and traditions of the country. It is used in Ayurvedic medicine and often decorates Shiva altars, as it's believed to be the god’s favourite flower. It can also flavour food, tobacco, tea and drinks.

Davana is one of those oils that can be difficult to source because its quality highly depends on weather conditions. Each year brings its share of surprises, which compels us to keep a list of different suppliers at hand - but the oil’s origin is always India.
