Longing and lustful jasmine gazes through hazy clouds of tobacco to look upon the Tenth Muse, Sappho. Renowned for themes of aching love, particularly among women, this ode to the striking ancient Greek poet captures the delicate fire of desire in her lyrical poetry, with romantic florals and a heart of smooth tonka.

Like any ancient tale, this perfume has many interpretations. When creating this fragrance for our Renaissance collection, Lush Perfumer, Emma, was inspired by the city of Florence. Working with a perfume historian, she chose orris to represent Iris, the emblem of the city. An image is painted of envious onlookers smoking on balconies, gazing upon upper-class women — animalistic jasmine and smoky tobacco filling the air. This perfume started in the Renaissance but the notes of desire have taken us to the Ancient Greek island of Lesbos. Named Sappho by Lush Co-Founder and Perfumer, Mark Constantine — whose name does this perfume evoke for you?

What in it for you?
Ideal for hopeless romantics.
- Orris: sourced from the root, not the flower, it adds an aromatic, powdery and violet-like note.
- Sandalwood: diffuses a warm, sweet and woody aroma.
- Tonka and vanilla: creates a soft and comforting heart to this fragrance.
